Chasin' The Blues.....Away (A Blues Trail Road Trip)

sunny 68 °F

Written Nov 4, in Laundromat, Tunica, MS

I’ve always wanted to write in laundromats.
There is something about sitting in a Laundromat waiting for clothes to cycle through to 'finished' which opens a porthole to my otherwise inaccessible thoughts and feelings. This twenty-five year old fantasy has lain dormant all these years until, on this sunny afternoon, it burst forth at the sight of a Laundromat sighted just a few feet from the side of the road in Tunica, MS. The old fantasy used to go something like this: I travel from town to town washing clothes (questionably the same ones over and over again?). I am excited and energized as my senses are aroused by the aroma of detergent and fabric softener, and I write what the Laundromat muse inspires. These essays would eventually culminate in a book which would find its way into laundromats in cities and towns across the country; people would pick them up from counter tops and chair seats to amuse themselves while waiting for their clothes. In time (hopefully a short amount), the book would serendipitously capture the attention of Oprah’s production staff, who would then book me on her show, thereby providing validation, for me, that I am indeed a real writer, putting to rest an uneasy little corner of my soul.

See the itinerary of this trip, and details about each destination.

Wow...I had no idea about that side of you! I usually don't write fiction, but a few years ago at a writer's retreat I wrote a short story (fiction) about a life-changing experience in a laundromat. I will send it to you as an email attachment.

When we were on the road with our duo, we dreaded laundry day......... First you had to find the laundromat and when you did, it was usually the worst one in town..... No AC, half the machines broken, no attendant to clean the place, etc. By the time the gig was over and we moved to a new town, we had found the good laundromat-that's a conundrum I believe------ but it wasn't enough to cancel out the memories of the first one.....
There were always plenty of characters hangin' out so there should be plenty of story ideas!

Helen, Laundromat's were one of my "dislikes" of camping. Now we do have a little "one piece" washer/dryer. Like Charlie, we never found the good one till the last day. In Arkansas, I went to one and was having such a nice conversation with a little old lady and in pulls a beat-up pickup with the back full of garbage bags. They came in with the least clothing they could wear so they could get everything washed I guess. You would not believe the smell when they dumped their bags all over the laudromat floor! Even dog feces fell out of their bags! Well, it didn't take long for this sweet little old lady to decide her clothes were dry enough, and I was right behind her. Another experience was not as pleasant, lol. Two guys came in and hung around till the place emptied out, all but me, that is. I still had things in the dryer. It was a very remote area and I was more than a little frightened. They were just sitting on the window sill watching me. I pretended everything was dry and grabbed them out of the dryer. Needless to say, I made Dick go with me on washdays after that.
